The Bluefin Tuna is a large species of tuna that is found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is known for its speed and strength, making it a prized catch.

Season: June - October

Catch/Consumption: Frequently caught, highly consumed especially in export markets.

Swordfish

Scientific Name: Xiphias gladius

Swordfish are large, predatory fish characterized by their long, flat bill. They are highly migratory and are found in both tropical and temperate parts of the ocean.

Season: April - September

Catch/Consumption: Moderately caught, prized in both local and export markets.

Common Smooth-Hound

Scientific Name: Mustelus mustelus

The Common Smooth-Hound is a type of houndshark. It is found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and is known for its smooth skin and docile nature.

Season: May - November

Catch/Consumption: Less frequently caught, mainly consumed locally.

Bovine Eagle Ray

Scientific Name: Aetomylaeus bovinus

The Bovine Eagle Ray is a large species of ray found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. It is known for its distinctive shape and ability to leap out of the water.

Season: April - September

Catch/Consumption: Rarely caught, often bycatch in trawling operations.

Common Stingray

Scientific Name: Dasyatis pastinaca

The Common Stingray is found in coastal waters of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. It has a venomous stinger and is often caught as bycatch.

Season: June - October

Catch/Consumption: Frequently caught, both targeted and as bycatch.

Common Guitarfish

Scientific Name: Rhinobatos rhinobatos

The Common Guitarfish is a species of cartilaginous fish that resembles both sharks and rays. It is commonly found in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

Season: May - August

Catch/Consumption: Occasionally caught, targeted for both local consumption and export.

Spinner Shark

Scientific Name: Carcharhinus brevipinna

The Spinner Shark is a fast-swimming, migratory shark that often forms schools. It is known for spinning out of the water during feeding.

Season: June - September

Catch/Consumption: Occasionally caught, with some local consumption and tourism interest.

Sandbar Shark

Scientific Name: Carcharhinus plumbeus

The Sandbar Shark is a large shark found in coastal regions. It is characterized by its high dorsal fin and prefers sandy or muddy bottoms.

Season: April - August

Catch/Consumption: Rarely caught, mainly bycatch in commercial fishing operations.

White Shark

Scientific Name: Carcharodon carcharias

The White Shark is the most well-known and largest predatory fish in the world. However, its population dynamics are poorly understood in the Mediterranean. It is often caught as bycatch in seines.
